I feel that I havent started the year of how I would have liked to as I missed the first week, resulting me in being a little behind. I have eventually been able to catch up however I definitely feel the stress a lot more this year, everything is moving a lot faster.
For ICT I would give myself a 10, as there isn't much variety at the moment, which is something i intend to improve.
For detail, I would give myself 14/15. I like to make sure that my posts are detailed informative and linked in some way.
3 things i need to improve are:
- Blogging more frequently.
- Having a wider range of ICT use throughout my blog posts.
- Taking more time dedicated to media.

Research - Skills Audit
In AS:
- Went out and took pictures around the city.
- Collected images related to location, costume, props and the storyline.
- Researching films related to the story line of thrillers.
In A2:
- Researching in more depth for the style of artist.
- How their music is distributed and portrayed.
- Collecting images and clips of videos for inspiration and to get a feel for who the artist is.
Throughout the media course i have developed more in depth skills in respect to research with practical work as I am able to analyse and think more critically when researching things related to the media product. Being more direct rather than thinking generally.

Research - Laura Mulvey
Overview of Class Work:
Mulvey"s Quote in my own words:
In a world structured by gender inequality, male and female admiration has been distinguished differently. The female figure is displayed in various ways for the male audience to admire and make believe their fantasies.
Questions
1. The kinds of representations of women in music videos i would expect to see are maybe provocative, explicit, being the main subject. Being looked at and admired in a subjective way. Not being fully clothed or wearing tight clothing, so their figure os on show.
2. the types of genres/ artists i would expect to see this in is r'n'b, hip hop, rap, rock, pop and dance.
3. the genres/ artists that challenge this are indie, jazz, soul and classical.
4. Yes, I do feel that Mulvey's quote is still relevant in todays society, if not worse. there are many more genres that illustrate Mulvey's opinion. The media has amplified the way women are represented to an extent where objective views are made and people even expecting women to dress or act a certain way because of how they have seen women being shown - generalisations.
2 videos I feel that illustrate this well are;
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines
The women are barely wearing much clothing, which is very revealing, for the male gaze. They are dancing around and having fun. However whilst the men are enjoying their company they are fully clothed and always in full shot. The women are dismembered to fulfil the male gaze. On the whole, a typical illustration of Mulvey's theory.
Alexandra Burke - Bad Boys
There are all male back up dancers who aren't wearing t-shirts. they are also quite toned - this is more appealing to female viewers. however Alexandra Burke, being the main subject and artist is fully clothes, but in leather. Which is tight, revealing her figure.

Research - Andrew Goodwin - Dancing in the Distraction Factory Analysis
Andrew Goodwin says that traditional narrative analyses do not apply to pop videos because; they are built around songs and songs do not pose traditional narrative structures. Pop videos use the singer as a narrator and a character. And the singer often looks directly at the camera, trying to involve the viewer at home.
Pop videos rely on 3 things:
- Repetition of images, in respect to choruses and lines
- Intertextuality; relative to parts/rhythms of other songs
- Advertisement; so the song is played on the radio and the video played on television. There is also a synergy element with the song being related to a television programme or film.
Videos provide a visual pleasure and may promote other aspects of media.
The videos aim to appeal to a wider audience other than the core target audience.
The structure of the music always ends by building up to a climax or constant repetition and then fading out.
There are three types of music videos:
Illustration - Which is where the video illustrates the story of the lyrics in a clear way, you can see that they are directly linked.
Here is a video that i think illustrates this well:
Christina Aguilera - Beautiful
This video is trying to communicate that everyone is beautiful in their own way. You should be proud of who and what you are. She expresses these views in a literal way through her lyrics.
Amplification - This type of video illustrates a direct link between the video and the lyrics, however other meanings are also introduced.
Here is a video that I think illustrates this well:
Ed Sheeran - Small Bump
In this video you can see children and parents around a hospital waiting room, whilst Ed Sheeran is just sitting there singing. The lyrics refer to a "small bump" being an unborn child, so your initial though is someone having a new baby and you waiting, however he actually referring to a dead child, he is reminiscing and remembering, it illustrates more pain rather than joy.
Disjuncture - This is where the video and the lyrics do not illustrate a very clear connection.
Here is a video that I think illustrates this well:
Storm Queen - Look Right Through
The name of the song is the majority of the lyrics sung in the video, however there is what appears to be a stuffed animal made lifelike dancing around a hotel maybe. And people all around doing day to day things. I cannot find a clear relation between the song and the video.

Planning: Final Song choice
The Song!
As a group we decided to do the song Love Killer by Cheryl Cole.
One big reason why we chose to do this song is because we agreed upon our artist being a female. As well as this tempo an beat of the song enables us to be very creative with editing as we would have to do a disjuncture video and also because there is a lot of tempo changes we can really show the skills we acquired in AS of editing.
We also felt that this song suited our artist very well as the voice is very believable also the lyrics are believable in the sense that we could see our artist sing this type of song.
We have also decided to call our artist:
Planning: Looking for inspiration - Branding
Branding ideas
To gain some inspiration for branding I looked at other artists who's music/ some songs can be considered the same genre as my artist, the genre being pop. To do this I look at various artists of this genre's album covers as from previous research this is where the branding is most prominent. I only looked at female artists as our artist is a female and male pop artists may brand differently. Also I looked at both American and British artists so that what i have discovered relates and is representative. I was able to identify a trend within the genre regarding colour pallet and branding. I found that the common colours used were:
- Blues
- Reds
- Pinks
- White/Creams
- Gold/Yellows
- Then a neutral colour most often black
Planning: Looking for inspiration
Looking at other music video for inspiration
Whilst watching Music channels i came across some music videos i thought had very interesting editing and thought similar editing could be done for my own music video. Below are the key features that stood out to me:
Nelly - Get like me
I really like the way some images were mirrored in the shot, also I like the way the shots were rotated to create a spinning effect.
Beyonce - Countdown
I love the editing of the multiple images of beyonce in one shot; the split screen sort of effect.
Rihanna - You da one
I found the writing (specific lyrics) was really interesting and added another visual aspect to the video which could be really good for my music video.
Taylor Swift - 22
I thought the image of taylor swift holding the heart and then throwing it down and stamping on it would work very well for our music video as it's about heartbreak and it would make the song seem less deep.
