Laura Mulvey

Representation falls into many sections - Gender, age, ethnicity, place, sexuality etc. Laura Mulveys outline view on representation in music videos was that women are objectified and dismembered. The focus on women in music videos is not them as a whole but features of women being amplified (legs, chest etc) for the purpose of a better video. This is called the 'Male Gaze'. The belief is that the male gaze is what sells and attracts more viewers.

A good example of this is Nicki Mianj - Starships. We see in this video that the performers body is amplified. She and the dancers are practically naked. The performer is covered in water making her body glisten. This again goes with Mulveys point on how women are objectified in videos especially in the Hip Hop genre.
