Research: Carol Venallis

Experiencing music video: Aesthetics and cultural context

Carol Venallis studies editing and camerawork closely in music videos. She observed the following:
  1. The usual rules of continuity editing are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen
  2. Edits may be really obvious to draw attention to themselves
  3. Jump cuts are often used
  4. The camera may move in time with the music
  5. A base track is often used to give the video a structure
